"Gata" War Club
Fiji Islands, Polynesia This "Gata" war club, of remarkable quality, is distinguished by the elegance of its lines and its red-brown patina, and by the superb contrast between the very great delicacy of the ornate decoration and the natural beauty of the apparent heart of the ironwood (casuarina), with a tormented vein. Gata clubs were used in Fiji as weapons of war and in religious rites.
