  • VARÈSE, c. 1975

Modern Design < Back VARÈSE, c. 1975 Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) / Atelier Pinton, France, 1975 or before. Artcurial limited edition of 100. Artist’s monogram (SD) Hand-tufted wool tapestry/rug (tufttée), H220xL150 cm Observations: In very good condition. Slight yellowing in white wool, and overall minimal signs of wear in both the upper and lower right corners of the tapestry (inferior to 1cm2). Editor’s label detachment (glue marks indicated in inferior right corner). Titled Varèse after Edgar Varèse (Paris, 1883- New York, 1965), this tapestry refers directly to the invention of simultanism in Music, founded by the cited composer, who bounded with visual artists of the early 20th century art movements. At the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kandinsky-Archives preserve correspondence proving the friendship between Varèse and the Delaunay couple, who concurrently developed simultanism in plastic arts. This particular piece is a remarkable example of Delaunay’s simultanism, showing how some colors might seem like a different color when juxtaposed and revealing through the use of contrasting and discordant palettes how these combinations of colors create an impression of movement. • Lisbon By Design

Exhibitions Archive < Back Lisbon By Design Lisboa OPENING 24 de mai. de 2023 CLOSING 28 de mai. de 2023 For this third Lisbon By Design edition, once again hosted in the wonderful Palacete Gomes Freire, we presented a selection of four designers, very different one from each other, but whose works, at the end, create a perfect scenario of what is design today and what is the idea of design that our gallery promotes. Without any doubt Fernando Brízio can be considered a legend in Portuguese design. He is active since the 90s, counting in his career many productions and iconic collections and some of his items belongs now to Indianapolis Museum of Arts and to Mude, Museo do Design e da Moda de Lisboa, among others. Not only he produces design pieces, he is a professor at Caldas Das Rainhas Escola de Belas-artes. For sure is conceptual design will be studied in Design History. Then, Hamrei is one of the most recognisable signatures in collectible design, he proposes elegant yet bold pieces. You’ll be delighted by the details of the works. He graduated in architecture and worked at Pierre Yovanovitch studio before opening his own brand, and he has clearly a special eye for art that you can perceive through the aesthetic of his design. Then we continue with André Sancho Silva, born and based in Portugal, who is a genius of experimentation: his design research explores important topics such as sustainability and recycle of materials. We got interested in his work after we saw some pieces at Galleria Rossana Orlandi in Milan, during FuoriSalone. And the circle closes with Toni Grilo, French designer who choose Portugal as his base, since the very beginning of his career he developed a bond with the local industry, and thanks to his work he elevated Portuguese to an international scale. • MIGUEL PALMA

Contemporary Art < Back MIGUEL PALMA Lisbon, 1964 Born in Lisbon, 1964. Lives and works in Lisbon and exhibits regularly since the late 80s. With a strong appeal to sculpture, the artistic background of Miguel Palma followed the direction of multimedia installations, using non-traditional methods of production and working regularly within a team of carpenters, mechanics, engineers and biologists, oriented towards an hybrid area and linked with the industrial production of the 20th century. Palma's work often addresses how technology has influenced the life of modern man, its relationship with the environment, the idea of human comfort or even the idea of power. In parallel to the construction of large and medium scale installations, the artist often resorts to drawing and the construction of miniatures of his projects. In addition, the artist also produces video, artist books and performances. Of special note among his solo shows are: Desconforto Moderno, curated by Miguel Von Hafe Perez at CGAC, Spain (2013); Trajectory, curated by Greg Esser at ASU Art Museum, USA (2012); Assembly Line, curated by Isabel Carlos at CAM – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon (2011); Miguel Palma: COMMA 01, curated by Graham Gussin and Sacha Craddock at Bloomberg Space, London, U.K. (2009); Miguel Palma / O Mundo às Avessas, curated by Miguel Wandschneider at Culturgest, Lisbon (2007); Miguel Palma, at Serralves Contemporary Art Museum, Oporto (2000); Traject, at Centre de Création Contemporaine, France (1997).
